Career Biography
Zanele Mngadi is the Chief Legal Counsel of Nedbank Group, where she leads the Group Legal function across South Africa and the SADC region, with responsibility for litigation, corporate and commercial advisory, regulatory and competition-law oversight, financial-crime advisory and group reputational-risk governance. In this role, she advises both the Group Executive Committee and the Board, shaping the strategic legal direction of the bank and stewarding the integrity of its risk posture. Over more than three decades, Zanele has built a reputation for principled leadership, technical depth and calm stewardship in high-stakes environments.
Her career began in litigation at Mia, Smith & Mokoena Attorneys, followed by founding her own practice — Z. Mngadi Attorneys — where she led civil and criminal litigation matters with early signs of the resilience and independence that would define her later leadership roles. Her transition to the Midrand Metropolitan Local Council deepened her expertise in administrative and land-use law, while roles at Matlala Inc and the Financial Services Board expanded her footprint into conveyancing, commercial due diligence, and market-abuse investigations presented to the Directorate of Market Abuse. She later joined Jowell Glyn & Marais as a Director, developing a strong practice in structured finance, corporate finance and competition law, advising on merger filings and compliance frameworks.
Zanele’s Nedbank journey began in 2007 as Senior Legal Adviser, supporting complex private-equity and cross-border funding transactions and representing the bank on the ALMA Loan Documentation Committee. A subsequent period as Head: Group Legal at African Bank broadened her executive responsibilities, including regulatory advisory, governance, credit-legislation interpretation, and industry-body representation.
Returning to Nedbank in 2011, she served as Head: Legal Corporate, and later Head: Legal, Nedbank CIB, where she provided strategic leadership across Corporate Banking, Investment Banking, Property Finance, Transactional and Shared Services, and Global Markets — advising high-level governance bodies such as the Credit Committee and the AML High-Risk Committee. In 2018 she became Executive Head: CIB Compliance, joining the CIB Executive Committee and overseeing enterprise-wide regulatory compliance and board reporting. Appointed Chief Legal Counsel in 2021, Zanele is known for her steady judgment, her commitment to ethical leadership, and her ability to lead large, diverse teams through complexity. She is especially respected for her guidance on reputational-risk matters and her role in harmonising legal capability across the Group and its subsidiaries.
Her professional excellence and influence in the legal community were recognised through her inclusion in the Legal 500 GC Powerlist: South Africa 2024 and 2025, highlighting her leadership, impact and contribution to the evolution of the in-house profession.
Beyond her technical and strategic expertise, Zanele brings a grounded, human leadership style shaped by her values: service, resilience, integrity and a deep commitment to developing others. Those who work with her describe her as a steady compass — principled, thoughtful and unwavering in her dedication to doing what is right. She holds an LLM in International Finance from Harvard Law School, an LLB from the University of Natal, and a B.Proc from the University of Zululand, and is admitted as both Attorney and Conveyancer in South Africa.
