Career Biography

Yvonne Perumal is one of South Africa’s most distinguished legal executives, with over two decades of postadmission experience shaping legal, regulatory and governance landscapes across the insurance, asset management, investment and broader financial services sectors. As an executive at Standard Bank Group, Yvonne leads the legal function for the Insurance and Asset Management Business Unit following her instrumental role in the integration of Liberty Group into Standard Bank, across multiple jurisdictions, including South Africa, Africa Regions and International markets.  

Her expertise spans corporate and commercial law, mergers and acquisitions, regulatory affairs, and complex legal disputes, with a proven record of guiding executive management and boards through strategic legal challenges. 

Yvonne’s career is defined by a rare combination of deep technical mastery, commercial acumen, and strategic leadership. She has guided organisations through some of the most complex and high value transactions in the sector, most notably the Standard Bank Group’s acquisition of Liberty, the Liberty Two Degrees buyout, and major cross border acquisitions and disposals across the continent. Her leadership has consistently enabled efficient deal execution, robust regulatory compliance, value creation and business growth.

A proven thought leader in corporate and commercial law, M&A, regulatory affairs, governance, and high stakes legal disputes, Yvonne has architected legal risk frameworks, led crisis management through events such as COVID19 and data breaches, and overseen landmark litigation including the influential Discovery vs Liberty judgment on intellectual property and customer data ownership.

Her achievements have been recognised through industry accolades, including being named to the Legal 500 GC Powerlist SA (2024 & 2025) and leading the Liberty Group Legal team to win Legal Department of the Year (2021) at the African Legal Awards.
