Head of Legal | Futuregrowth Asset Management

What are the most significant cases, projects and/or transactions that you and/or your legal team have recently been involved in?

Futuregrowth has been involved in several significant projects that align with its dual focus on commercial returns and developmental impact in South Africa.  Some of its more noteworthy projects include financing community property developments, playing an active role in national infrastructure priorities, especially in energy, transport, and agriculture, contributing to housing and social upliftment, funding equipment for small-scale farmers, supporting rural economic activity and food security.  Futuregrowth is still one of the largest fixed income houses in South Africa, focusing on continued investment in South African bonds and inflation-linked bonds, supporting capital markets stability and funding for government and parastatal projects.

How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

Legal processes must remain efficient even under stress. I streamline contract management, prioritize critical negotiations, and ensure that legal bottlenecks don’t impede investment execution.  During periods of instability, I anchor decisions in our mandates and fiduciary duties, reinforce governance discipline, and structure contracts to safeguard against heightened risks. I maintain proactive regulatory engagement and streamline legal processes to ensure operational continuity. My focus is on resilience—anticipating vulnerabilities, providing clear options, and ensuring Futuregrowth remains compliant while delivering on its developmental and financial objectives.

Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?

My career saw a move from competition law to developmental finance, which is both unusual and compelling.  In private practice, I spent a decade immersed in complex competition matters—mergers, investigations, and regulatory enforcement—which gave me a deep technical grounding. But moving in-house was unique because it required me to shift from being an external advisor to becoming a strategic partner within the business.

Whilst in-house, I’ve had the opportunity to apply that legal discipline in a developmental investment context—where the questions are not only about legal compliance, but also about how contracts, governance, and risk management can enable projects that make a tangible difference in South Africa. That blend of technical competition law expertise with the broader responsibility of guiding an asset manager through complex mandates and developmental investments has been particularly rewarding and unique in my career.

What is a cause, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about? Why is this?

I am deeply passionate about contributing to meaningful change in South Africa. Given our country’s history, I believe that as professionals we carry a responsibility to give back to society in ways that create lasting impact. For me, this is not just about personal fulfillment—it’s about ensuring that the work I do helps build resilience, opportunity, and dignity for communities that need it most.

Working at Futuregrowth makes this possible. The organisation’s commitment to developmental investing allows me to align my professional expertise with my personal values. I can apply my legal and governance skills to projects that not only deliver financial returns but also uplift communities, strengthen infrastructure, and support sustainable growth. That intersection—where professional discipline meets social impact—is what drives me, and it’s why I am passionate about this cause.
