Career Biography
I am the Company General Counsel of Coronation Fund Managers, having joined in September 2013 as Legal Manager. Since then, I have built and transformed the group’s in-house legal function into a fully resourced and strategically embedded capability that supports Coronation’s global operations. I lead the group’s legal function across South Africa and its international business, providing commercially focused, strategic counsel to executive leadership, senior managers and key stakeholders and advising the board as required.
My mandate spans the full spectrum of legal oversight across a complex, client-centric and highly regulated asset management environment. I provide strategic leadership across all areas of the business, including advising the investment team on corporate actions affecting investee entities and overseeing external legal service providers across jurisdictions. As a member of key internal committees, I ensure that high quality legal governance is embedded within decision-making processes at every level of the organisation.
A core priority for me is positioning the legal function as a value-enabler rather than a control mechanism. By operating as an integral business partner, I develop a deep understanding of Coronation’s commercial drivers and risk appetite, enabling early engagement, proportionate risk assessment and the delivery of solutions that are both legally robust and commercially viable. This approach strengthens client outcomes while safeguarding Coronation’s reputation, client-centric culture and long-term sustainability.
I am particularly energised by the opportunities presented by technological advancement, including AI, and I am focused on leveraging innovation within the legal function to strengthen the delivery of legal support.
Coronation’s culture of meritocracy and accountability strongly aligns with my leadership philosophy. I cultivate a collaborative and high-performance team environment that encourages rigorous debate, diversity of thought and professional growth. Mentorship and skills development are important to me and I am committed to developing technically strong, commercially aware and client-focused in-house lawyers.
I have particularly enjoyed supporting Coronation’s long-term transformation and sustainability initiatives. I was the in-house legal lead in Coronation’s establishment of Intembeko Investment Administrators, one of South Africa’s first black-owned investment administrators, advancing meaningful economic participation and skills transfer.
More recently, I led the in-house legal workstream for structuring and implementing Coronation’s broad-based black economic empowerment (B-BBEE) ownership transaction, establishing both an employee share scheme and a broad-based ownership scheme. The transaction deepened black ownership at shareholder level, broadened beneficiary participation and reinforced Coronation’s transformation objectives. It involved complex structuring and multi-stakeholder co-ordination and was recognised with the 2024 BEE Deal of the Year at the DealMakers Awards.
Prior to joining Coronation, I was a Corporate Financier at PSG Capital (PSG Group) advising on capital raisings, JSE listings, mergers and acquisitions and engaged with regulators such as the Takeover Regulation Panel and the JSE. During my tenure at PSG Capital, I achieved the highest national mark in the JSE Approved Executive Examination in the year that I wrote it. Before PSG, I held senior leadership roles in in-house legal departments within major financial institutions, including Nedbank, Old Mutual Bank and BoE Private Clients.
I hold a BA (Law Stream) and LLB from the University of Cape Town and an LLM in Commercial Law from the University of South Africa.
