What piece of work or project over the past year are you most proud of, and why was it particularly significant for the business?
Over the past year, I have been most proud of my involvement in two renewable portfolio transactions – the sale of solar projects to Ignis in December and the acquisition of a wind portfolio from Plenium Partners and Bankinter in April. Both transactions required coordinating multiple stakeholders across legal, finance, business teams and external counsel under significant time pressure. They were particularly significant because they supported the company’s strategy to enhance and diversify its renewable generation base in the growing Iberian power market.
What made this project especially rewarding was the opportunity to go beyond purely technical legal work and act as a true business partner. Alongside drafting and negotiating transaction documents, I was closely involved in helping internal stakeholders assess commercial risks, prioritise key negotiation points and find practical solutions to issues that arose throughout the process. This required balancing legal protection with commercial realities and maintaining momentum in a fast-moving environment.
The transactions also reinforced the importance of communication and stakeholder management in an in-house role. Different teams naturally approached issues from different perspectives, and part of my role was helping align those perspectives into workable and commercially sensible solutions. Seeing the transactions progress from initial discussions through to signing and implementation (with completion of the acquisition expected shortly) gave me a much broader understanding of how legal advice contributes to strategic decision-making within a business. Most importantly, the experience demonstrated how legal counsels can add value not only by identifying risks, but by helping the business achieve its objectives efficiently and responsibly.
What skills or experiences have been most important in your development as an in‑house lawyer so far?
One of the most important aspects of my development as an in-house lawyer has been learning how to provide commercially focused advice rather than approaching matters purely from a technical legal perspective. My previous experience in a law firm gave me a strong foundation in transactional work, drafting and legal analysis, but moving in-house has significantly developed my understanding of how legal issues fit within broader business objectives.
Working closely with commercial and operational teams has helped me become more pragmatic and solutions-oriented. I have learned that effective in-house legal support is often about identifying the key risks, explaining them clearly and helping the business make informed decisions, rather than trying to eliminate every possible risk. Developing that judgement has been one of the most valuable parts of my transition in-house.
Another important area of development has been stakeholder management and communication. In-house lawyers regularly work with colleagues from different backgrounds who may not have legal education, so being able to explain complex issues in a concise and practical way is essential. I have become much more confident in adapting my advice depending on the audience and understanding the commercial context behind each request.
My involvement in renewable energy, M&A and corporate finance matters has also exposed me to a wide variety of regulatory, financing and strategic considerations, broadening both my technical and commercial knowledge. Alongside transactional work, I have regularly supported finance teams on matters involving financing arrangements, guarantees and ISDA-related documentation, which has given me additional exposure to the financial and operational side of the business. More recently, my involvement in matters arising from the potential merger between Galp and Moeve has allowed me to work across different business areas and navigate increasingly complex and fast-paced projects.
Overall, the pace and variety of the work have encouraged me to become adaptable, proactive and comfortable managing competing priorities while maintaining a practical and business-oriented approach.
