In an increasingly complex global environment, how are you helping your organisation navigate risk while still supporting growth?
The companies I work for operate primarily in the local Paraguayan market; however, engagement with international credit markets to obtain financing is becoming increasingly necessary, particularly in relation to the large infrastructure projects in which we are involved, which requires the organisations to face and manage new risks. The role of in-house counsel is fundamental in identifying and analysing those risks and in developing strategies to mitigate them.
How has the role of General Counsel evolved in recent years, and where do you see GCs creating the most value today?
The greater openness of local companies to international markets in an increasingly globalised environment requires in-house lawyers to develop new and more effective strategies, not only legal but also managerial, in order to provide their clients with the best legal solutions to these new challenges.
How has your relationship with the board changed, and where do you add the most value at board level?
There is currently more direct interaction between in-house legal counsel and the board of directors, which allows for better management of legal matters and faster decision-making in relation to them.
What has been your most significant challenge as General Counsel in recent years, and what did you learn from it?
The greatest challenges I have faced as General Counsel in recent years have been the structuring of financing for infrastructure projects in international markets and with multilateral credit institutions, given that there were no precedents for local Paraguayan companies carrying out transactions of this nature.
