General legal counsel | Etihad Rail
Team size: More than 20 lawyers across the Group
What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past 12 months?
In addition to the final arrangements for railway passenger services across the UAE, I have been privileged to contribute to the advancement of the first High-Speed Rail project connecting Abu Dhabi and Dubai. This multibillion-dirham initiative brings together an exceptional team of engineers, railway operators, developers, financial experts and legal professionals. The complexity and excitement surrounding the project are reminiscent of the launch of the UAE Federal Railway Network in 2018. It is both a landmark infrastructure development and a testament to regional ambition.
In parallel, we are actively negotiating several international railway opportunities aimed at expanding Etihad Rail’s footprint beyond the UAE and Oman. These projects involve host-state regulatory considerations, funding and commercial requirements, which demand close coordination with a diverse group of stakeholders, further enhancing the strategic depth and scope of our legal work.
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
Periods of instability inevitably bring uncertainty, but they also test the strength and agility of an organisation’s legal function. My approach is rooted in measured, principled decision-making that helps the organisation maintain clarity and focus. Rather than allowing uncertainty to paralyse commercial decision-making, we work to identify pragmatic, risk-managed solutions that keep the business moving forward. The legal function must act both as a stabilising force and a strategic partner. By aligning legal risk assessments with broader business objectives, we ensure that the organisation remains resilient and responsive. A crisis often demands quicker decisions, but never at the cost of legal soundness. Firm guidance, transparent communication and scenario-based planning are essential tools in these moments.
What strategies do you employ to ensure the successful digital transformation of a legal department while maintaining compliance with your country’s data protection laws?
Digital transformation demands continuous curiosity and a willingness to challenge the status quo. What appears to be a groundbreaking solution today can quickly become obsolete. My strategy, therefore, centres on maintaining an open mindset, embracing change and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. We constantly assess and adapt our tools, processes and frameworks to ensure they are not only effective but also compliant with evolving data protection laws. This includes proactive engagement with IT, compliance and regulatory teams to ensure every innovation is aligned with legal requirements. There is no room for complacency – only a drive to find better, more secure and more efficient ways to deliver legal services.
