How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
In my view, a strong team culture is the foundation of resilience. When a team supports one another, presents a united front, and engages in open, 360-degree feedback, it is far better equipped to respond effectively — no matter the challenge.
At Equiti, the pace and scale of our business growth have undoubtedly tested our team culture. We’ve had to navigate tight deadlines, budget constraints, and high-pressure scenarios. Yet I’m proud to say that the legal team has shown consistent resilience — anchored by our strong team bond, a shared work ethic, empowerment of individuals, and a culture of open communication.
To ensure that our legal strategy is fully aligned with the broader group strategy, integration with key stakeholders is essential. We maintain close relationships with the local CEOs of each subsidiary, and we actively participate in commercial governance forums across the group. This level of engagement gives us both visibility into the strategic direction of the business and the ability to prioritise legal work in a way that supports those goals directly. Legal becomes a proactive contributor, not just a reactive function.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?
There are three key attributes that I believe are essential for any modern in-house legal professional: commercial mindedness. In-house counsel must operate seamlessly within the business — not as a siloed or obstructive function, but as a partner. Understanding the commercial landscape and business objectives is vital to providing relevant and pragmatic legal advice; nan understanding of risk — and risk appetite. The ability to navigate complex decisions depends on a deep understanding of both legal risk and the organisation’s tolerance for it. This enables counsel to help the business move strategically and confidently while remaining compliant and protected. Ultimately, we aim to be trusted advisors, not just legal technicians; and technological adoption. Embracing legal tech is no longer optional. Efficient delivery, cost management, and alignment with the evolving legal landscape all depend on how effectively legal teams adopt and integrate technology into their workflows. From automation to AI tools, technology helps us scale, stay responsive, and add greater value to the business.
