Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?

The introduction of artificial intelligence systems to the legal function adds value to the entire organisation. Using AI to create highly standardised documents such as non-disclosure or confidentiality agreements, and robotic process automation for highly detailed but low added value. Over time the new technology will eliminate much contract drafting work, a lot of research will be automated and will expedite finding precedents, with the legal function spending less time on administrative tasks and more on strategic advice that adds significant business value.

What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?

I believe in making human rights a reality for everyone, everywhere. Everyone needs access to medicine, food and water, clothes, and shelter. Unfortunately, there are still millions of people out there who don’t have these necessities. All humans are equal and should not be discriminated against.

What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?

In my opinion, the most essential aspect to ensure your success is understanding the company’s mission and business including their expectations. The next step would be discussing your plans so that there is complete clarity of timing and expectations. As an in-house lawyer my role is to identify the various risks and advise the company in ways that enable the business leaders to make sound, informed decisions. I make sure to provide my internal clients with an alternative that could satisfy their objectives while mitigating the legal risks. My guidance and work should be comprehensive yet less formal than the advice given by law firms, ‘communicate in short paragraphs and bullets points and engage in short conversation’.

What can law firms do to improve their service to the legal department?

Having held the position of in-house lawyer for over fifteen years, the most important factor is understanding client needs and being consistent with the service they deliver. Responsiveness is key, your clients want to know which stage you are at with their legal issues. Keeping the client updated on trends and court decisions in your practice area.
