Team size: Five

Major legal advisers: Creel, García-Cuéllar, Aíza & Enríquez

Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?

I consider myself to be an advocate in promoting gender equality and have implemented diversity and inclusion policies within Capital Indigo that encompass all our advisors in a cost-efficient way. It has become crucial for me, on my role as co-founder and current president of Mujeres Invirtiendo, to achieve an impact in the Mexican market setting the example on advancing on best practices that empower women such as: (i) more active and conscious inclusion of women in deals and projects both in the portfolio companies in which we invest in and in the advisors’ teams we work with, (ii) major visibility of women accomplishments in the deals we participate and in the different fund managers we interact with, (iii) securing soft skills and mentorship keys to develop strong women candidates as board members, and (iv) acting as a true sponsor of women investors and collaborators.

Can you foresee any key developments to the way general counsel work over the next five years?

For sure, over the next 5 years, general counsel will need to be more conscious on the decisions they will be making from a more sustainable standpoint than ever before.

What are some of the main trends impacting the industry sector you work in in Mexico?

The main trend in the private capital industry in Mexico is the implementation of ESG policies. investors, LPs and even Mexican regulators are setting more and more requirements regarding sustainability practices for fund managers, that are pushing us not only to comply with these requirements internally but also to permeate them into our portfolio companies, generating a multiplying effect on what I find a necessary trend to be happening in our industry and in any industry nowadays.

How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?

I constantly and increasingly work on procurement of surpassing unconscious bias by openly putting the hurdles on the table and finding creative solutions by including a diversity and inclusion perspective to all initiative I propose. I truly believe this is the only way to earn the support of both men and women, as allies on this important cause. As an example, I try to involve our whole team at Capital Indigo in the work I do at Mujeres Invirtiendo, inviting them to be a part of the events in which we spotlight different women among the industry to support their careers but also to create inspiring role models within it, become champions of the main purpose of Mujeres Invirtiendo which is to achieve a larger number of women in leading and decision-taking positions in the VC & PE industry, and attend to DMI Decididas Summit, a one of a kind event that I had the honour to organise with two amazing women from the organisation Decididas (Barbara Arredondo Ayala and Olga Segura Gall), that consisted on a summit with a 5 year plan and commitment for creating impact in Mexico and the LATAM region, and which main theme was gender equality through the diverse voices of agents for change and catalysers of efforts, by promoting women not only in the investment, legal and finance markets, but most importantly to address the intersectional and transversal issues of social mobility, innovation and creativity with a gender lens.
