Barry Curran
Managing Director - Head of Legal | Carne Group
Team size: 20+
What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past 12 months?
Working in the legal department of a global management company solution provider requires the ability to deal with a wide range of matters, ranging from corporate governance to negotiation of contracts to complex fund structuring, while adapting on an ongoing basis to global regulatory changes. Due to the international dimension of our firm, our role involves being creative to meet the needs of our clients while ensuring compliance with the local legal and regulatory rules.
We have, in the past twelve months, launched funds in various jurisdictions through the passporting of our Irish and Luxembourg management companies. We also acquired a rival management company in Luxembourg.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?
Flexibility, adaptability, commercial acumen, resilience, and patience.
Based on your experiences in the past year, are there any trends in the legal or business world that you are keeping an eye on, of which you think other in-house lawyers should be mindful?
The use of new technology, in particular AI and those linked to management and distribution of financial products. SFDR and ESG considerations continue to impact our regulatory environment both domestic and internally. That said, the Irish funds sector and its in-house lawyers are renowned for being very resilient and flexible and have continuously proven our ability to adapt quickly to any new business challenges.
