Can you talk about you or your company’s efforts relating to renewability, sustainability or other environmentally- friendly activities?
Vena Energy is a leading renewable energy company in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. Headquartered in Singapore, we own, develop, construct, operate, manage, and commercialise renewable energy projects across APAC, with over 800 employees across 77 corporate and site offices. Our corporate mission is to accelerate the energy transition across APAC, and our 2.7GW+ operating portfolio of utility scale solar and wind projects provides our customers with clean energy solutions to contribute towards the goal to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
We place the sustainable and affordable development of renewable energy solutions at the centre of our strategy. Respecting the natural environment, empowering our people and communities, and conducting business in an ethical and transparent manner creates a virtuous cycle which facilitates the delivery and execution of our renewable energy projects and helps us realise our corporate mission. In 2022, Vena Energy’s operating portfolio generated 3.7TWh of clean renewable energy which is equivalent to avoiding 2.7 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Why are in-house lawyers well-placed to drive change in their organisations?
Our in-house lawyers are closely involved in every stage of our projects, from early development, through to construction, commissioning and operations. As trusted and reliable advisors to our business leaders, we are a key part of any decision-making process and are well placed to influence and guide our internal stakeholders to help ensure that our project activities are carried out ethically and responsibly and create positive social and economic impacts in the communities in which we operate. Aside from project development, our in-house lawyers cover a range of day-to-day matters, from employment-related issues to corporate governance and structuring. We assist the Compliance team on conduct related matters and our legal team heads sit on the relevant senior management committees for each country or region, which makes us a key part of management decisions. This allows us to provide, among other things, the legal/regulatory and policy/ethical perspective on any given matter and help drive change within our organisation.
It can be difficult to truly measure a company’s track record and accomplishments in terms of their environmentally friendly behaviour. What do you think has, until now, been mostly missed when discussing how green a company is?
One of the more important aspects that has been overlooked historically when discussing a company’s green practices is supply chain management. Environmental standards of outsourced production of goods and products can result in a significant carbon footprint and other negative environmental impacts that are not reflected in the company’s own operations. A positive development in today’s race to address climate change is the growing recognition of the need for more collective, unified efforts between businesses and the value chain. At Vena Energy, absolute emissions linked to the manufacturing and transportation of related equipment will inevitably rise as we continue to grow and build more renewable energy projects. We recognise the importance of working with our suppliers to understand and improve the transparency of these indirect emissions and develop strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our supply chain. We have been proactive about engaging our suppliers in the past few years on a range of ESG-related issues including carbon emissions, labour practices, and human rights.
