What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past 12 months?
Over the past 12 months, my role as General Counsel at GEK TERNA Group’s various Motorway Concession & Operation Companies has been marked by two landmark projects — representing a major step forward in Greece’s strategic transport infrastructure. First, we successfully acquired the Attiki Odos concession — Athens’ vital 70 km toll-operated urban and suburban corridor. In an unprecedented 24-day preparation and a split-second transition, the concession changed hands, with all physical and electronic systems switching over while keeping the motorway fully operational. The transition’s precision and complexity made it a moment of immense pride and professional achievement.
Shortly thereafter, the VOAK Motorway Project in Crete was launched. This large-scale, mostly greenfield concession involves the construction of over 180 km of new motorway infrastructure stretching across the island of Crete, including bridges, tunnels, and a comprehensive service road network. It also encompasses the upgrade of bypasses in major cities, along with the upgrade, operation, and maintenance of the old road during the construction phase. The VOAK project aims to significantly reduce road accidents right from the start, while improving safety, comfort, and connectivity in a sustainable, environmentally conscious manner.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?
In my view, the most important qualities for a modern corporate counsel are forward-thinking, practical involvement, and strong commercial insight — each complementing the fundamental requirement of being an experienced legal professional and manager.
I believe that forward-thinking is key to anticipating potential legal hurdles, allowing the company to address issues early and stay ahead of the curve. Practical involvement is equally essential, as in-house counsels need to be actively engaged in the daily operations, offering real-world legal solutions that directly impact the business. Additionally, a deep understanding of the company’s goals and the broader market landscape ensures that legal advice aligns with the business’s strategic direction, ultimately supporting its growth and competitiveness. Combining these attributes with solid legal expertise enables in-house counsels to serve as trusted advisors, effectively balancing legal risks with business needs. It’s this blend of legal proficiency and business understanding that allows us to contribute to the organisation’s success.
What is a cause, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about?
I am passionate about sustainability and green business practices in motorway infrastructure, particularly in relation to global intermodal systems. Expanding alternative fuel outlets and integrating eco-friendly facilities into motorway operations are key steps toward reducing the carbon footprint. Additionally, incorporating green technologies, such as solar-powered charging stations and eco-efficient construction materials, helps build a more sustainable and resilient core network for both passengers and freight, while also fostering further economic growth and development.
