What are the most significant cases, projects and/or transactions that you and/or your legal team have recently been involved in?

Over my 20-year career, I have been involved in numerous significant transactions, cases and projects related to the financial sector, particularly the pension fund industry, insurance, fiduciary, banking and compliance. Recently, with the operational synergy of MAPFRE entities in DR I have played a key role. Also, we have actively participated in the special commission for the development of the new DR insurance law, social security law and others essential regulations that impact directly on our businesses. One main challenge was the implementation of a few core new regulations impacting the insurance and health services.

How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

During a crisis the management of the legal and compliance aspects are one of the key aspects of our entities. The crisis management requires meticulous planning and effective organisation. Under my management, I ensure the resilience establishing a clear leadership that directs the team’s actions and ensures that everyone is aligned with the recovery objectives, anticipating possible scenarios and creating specific protocols to respond quickly and minimizing the minimum impact, ensuring a transparent communication to all team members and focusing on regulatory compliance, proper management of contracts to ensure the control of third-party risk and the protection of our interests and civil liability that any non-compliance may generate.

What is a cause, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about? Why is this?

I am passionate about investment transactions, mergers, acquisitions, new products and services, and new large-scale business operations. I am passionate about innovation and new technologies, which provide competitive advantages in businesses where differentiated services are the foundation of their success. My goal is to change the paradigms of the legal in-house services.

Based on your experiences in the past year, are there any trends in the legal or business world that you are keeping an eye on that you think other in-house lawyers should be mindful of?

Definitely. Currently we are living and experiencing the era of large-scale changes. Technology changes every day, increasingly new challenges and one of the impacted professions is the role of the lawyer. We should be focusing to take advantage of new technologies such as blockchain, AI, big data and digital platforms that facilitates our legal role. Also, new trends as digital law, environmental law, and financial market have begun to consolidate as fields of development that any new legal professional should focus on.
