What are the most significant cases, projects or transactions that you and/or your legal team have recently been involved in?

I’m currently handling a re-organisation project within the Group, for which I signed an NDA. I can only say I’m following the legal assessment and execution for the project, including but not limited to people separation, business continuity and legal entity consolidation.

I’d prefer to describe more about a finished case, which is very meaningful to our team.  When I joined Wyeth Nutrition in early 2018, I took over a trademark infringement litigation case. We represented Wyeth (Shanghai) Trading Co., Ltd. (as one of the plaintiffs and the beneficial owner of the trademark) and sued 6 defendants, including Guangzhou Wyeth Baby Maternal and Infant Products Co., Ltd., for trademark infringement and unfair competition. In April 2021, we were fully supported by the court with a high punitive damages claim (i.e. RMB 35 million). In this case, our local team discussed with central team and external lawyer about our litigation strategy, supported in collecting evidence and attended the court hearings, etc. It was a typical case in the field of intellectual property that year, and I was awarded “ALB Top 15 China Intellectual Property In-house Counsels” in 2022.

Recently my team has been honored with the “2025 Inhouse Legal Outstanding Contribution Award” by China Business Law Journal, for our contribution to and winning of the “illuma” trademark protection case.

How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

I think the key is to change mindset and implement the change in daily legal support. For the change, we mainly focus on the following two aspects:

To provide not only assessment but also solution. Given the current economic climate and the highly competitive market environment, the business teams become highly demanding. They cannot live with a legal risk assessment from research on laws and regulations. In addition to researching and analysing applicable laws and regulations, we need to proactively study the practice of competitors, understand the enforcement authorities’ interpretation of laws and how they enforce relevant cases. Based on the aforementioned, we shall point out the actual risks associated with a proposed business initiative and come out a practicable solution when the assessment indicates high risk.

To do more facilitation for business while stay firm upholding our principle and high compliance standard. By streamlining processes and offering operational conveniences, we help the business teams complete internal legal and compliance approvals or filings in less time. While earning the business teams’ trust, we shall stay firm on principles and the Group’s compliance standards. In a hyper-competitive environment, holding the bottom line is the cornerstone of sustainable growth as a single compliance incident can reset the business to zero. We shall stay vigilant in spotting major risks and play well as a gatekeeper.
