What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
Our legal team has been at the forefront of several high-impact matters and strategic initiatives over the past year, reflecting our commitment to navigating the evolving regulatory landscape and driving innovation within the department. Our team has played a central role in advising on and implementing data privacy frameworks across the region.
Recognizing the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence tools across the business, our legal team has been instrumental in establishing a robust AI governance framework. We have an internal AI use policy that sets out clear principles for the responsible deployment of AI, including requirements for transparency, fairness, accountability, and human oversight. Our team has worked cross-functionally with technology, compliance, and risk teams to conduct risk assessments and to ensure that any AI-driven decision-making processes comply with applicable laws and ethical standards.
Our legal team has embraced technology as a strategic enabler, investing in tools and platforms that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and the overall delivery of legal services. Additionally, we have begun integrating AI-powered tools for document review and legal research, allowing our lawyers to focus on higher-value, strategic work. These technology initiatives have not only improved internal operations but have also strengthened our ability to serve the business as a modern, forward-thinking legal function.
What new pressures are you facing from the business as expectations for legal to act as a strategic partner continue to grow?
As expectations for the legal function to act as a strategic partner continue to grow, our team faces several new and intensifying pressures. The business increasingly looks to legal not only for risk mitigation but for proactive guidance on new business, launching new products, and navigating complex regulatory environments in real time. The rapid pace of regulatory change, particularly in areas such as data privacy, AI, and cybersecurity, means that our team must stay ahead of evolving requirements across multiple jurisdictions, translating complex and sometimes conflicting rules into actionable business guidance. There is also growing demand for legal to deliver faster turnaround times, greater cost efficiency, and measurable outcomes, all while managing an expanding scope of responsibilities that now includes technology governance, and cross-functional initiatives.
How is your organisation adapting to the rapid evolution of data protection, AI governance and cybersecurity requirements in Brazil?
Brazil’s regulatory environment for data protection, AI, and cybersecurity is evolving rapidly, and our organization has taken proactive steps to adapt. Brazil’s General Data Protection Law (LGPD) remains the cornerstone of our data protection compliance framework. Our team has been closely monitoring the activities of the Brazilian Data Protection Authority (ANPD) and has been working to map data flows, update internal policies, and leverage this new framework to streamline operations. We are also closely following the new ECA Digital legislation and the increase of protection of minors in the digital space.
On the AI Governance front, Brazil is on the verge of enacting one of Latin America’s first comprehensive AI laws. The ANPD is expected to serve as the lead coordinating body for AI regulation, working alongside sector-specific regulators such as the Central Bank (BACEN), the Securities Commission (CVM), and the health authority (ANVISA). Our legal team has also been preparing for these developments. This all results in our team working closely with the Security team to strengthen our cybersecurity posture by updating incident response protocols, enhancing vendor risk management, and ensuring alignment with both domestic requirements and international best practices.
Taken together, these initiatives reflect our legal team’s strategic vision and its proactive approach to the challenges and opportunities presented by the current regulatory and technological environment. We remain committed to delivering excellence across all of these areas and to further advancing our capabilities in the months ahead.
