What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

While we’ve managed a variety of complex cases, I’m most proud of the foundational improvements our team has implemented. We successfully launched new automation and case intake systems to empower our internal clients with self-service options. This initiative has been a game-changer, allowing clients to find answers efficiently while freeing our lean legal resources for high-impact work that requires strategic thinking. Furthermore, these systems provide valuable data and analytics, allowing us to visualize our workload, track metrics, and make data-driven decisions. This has not only improved our efficiency but also enhanced our ability to proactively address legal risks.

What do you see as an opportunity or risk over the next six months?

The biggest opportunity on the horizon is the continued emergence of AI in the legal field. As in-house lawyers, we can leverage these powerful technologies to enhance our services and drive greater efficiency. My focus over the next six months will be to systematically test various AI tools and use cases, from contract analysis to legal research, to identify how to best integrate them into our workflows. However, this comes with the significant risk of “hallucination,” where AI generates convincing but false information. We must proceed with rigorous testing to harness AI’s power as a tool to augment our expertise without compromising the integrity of our legal advice.

What do you find most rewarding about working as an in-house lawyer?

For me, the most rewarding aspect is supporting and empowering my team members. It is incredibly gratifying to watch them grow, develop their skills, and achieve their career aspirations. I am committed to investing in their professional development through mentorship and challenging opportunities. Seeing them confidently take on new responsibilities and excel in their roles is the ultimate measure of my own success.

Looking back, which experience has most shaped your approach as an in-house lawyer?

My involvement in a large-scale, global post-merger integration project most profoundly shaped my approach. The project demanded more than legal expertise; it required a deep understanding of the company’s business operations, policies, and systems across different regional markets. Seamless collaboration with other functions like operations, finance, and HR was paramount. That experience taught me that an effective in-house lawyer must be a business partner first and a legal expert second.

What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?

The most critical attributes for a modern in-house counsel are adaptability and agility. As the business landscape is in a constant state of flux, we must be open to new approaches, whether from new technology, geopolitics, or regulations. However, this adaptability must be anchored by an unwavering commitment to integrity. In an environment of pressure and ambiguity, in-house counsel must be the moral compass of the organization. The ability to be both a flexible business partner and a steadfast guardian of the company’s values is what truly defines a successful modern in-house counsel.
