How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
During times of instability or crisis, I believe it’s essential for the Legal team to stay prepared and keep a close eye on any changes in regulations or the external environment. We need to work hand-in-hand with other functions—whether it’s HR, Finance, or Operations—to make sure we’re all aligned and can respond quickly to any issues that come up. I also find it helpful to benchmark with other markets and industries, so we can learn from best practices and adapt them to our own situation.
Clear communication is key, both within the team and with the wider business. It should be the goal of Legal team to provide practical, solution-oriented advice that helps the organisation move forward, even in challenging times. And not just that, even in certain situation, Legal can be able to take the lead to manage the crisis, not just a support function.
By focusing on preparation, collaboration, and open communication, I believe the Legal team can play a crucial role in helping the organisation stay resilient and navigate through uncertainty with confidence.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?
In my view, the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel go far beyond just legal knowledge, including business accument, strong communication, integrity, forward planning and collaboration.
We need strong business acumen to really understand the company’s objectives and make sure our legal strategies support the bigger commercial picture. Good communication and presentation skills are also key, which helps explain complex legal issues clearly to different teams. Integrity and credibility are fundamental—these build trust and ensure our advice is respected. It’s also important to be forward-thinking, to anticipate risks and help the business stay resilient. Collaboration is essential, as working closely with cross functions allows us to deliver practical, well-rounded solutions.
With these attributes and good technical expertises, I believe legal can be seen as a partner, not a barrier—actively supporting business initiatives while protecting the organisation’s interests. As a result, this will help build and maintain the success of any in-house legal team.
