What are the most significant cases, projects, or transactions that you and your legal team have recently been involved in?
Over the past year, I led the legal team in managing all critical legal aspects of a major wind power project, overseeing complex issues relating to land and construction. In addition, I advised, from the legal perspective, on the project’s re-financing, successfully securing approximately $30m from a local bank.
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
I always ensure that our team remains flexible in decision-making, while keeping compliance and effectiveness as the two key priorities. In times of instability or crisis, the role of the legal head becomes even more critical: to provide clear guidance that balances the company’s strategic interests with strict adherence to the law.
General counsel often speak of the need to be strategic to reach the pinnacle of the profession. What does being strategic mean to you?
To me, being strategic means anticipating risks, aligning legal advice with long-term business goals, and ensuring decisions both protect the company and create value.
Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?
Yes, I still remember a unique case during COVID-19, where I was involved in seeking an injunction to protect the interests of a foreign-owned company in a dispute between a main contractor and its subcontractor. All legal work had to be managed and completed remotely. Our team not only provided theoretical legal advice, but also ensured the injunction was granted by the court and enforceable. That experience remains one of the most memorable highlights of my legal career.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?
I believe the three most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel are strong ethics, a problem-solving legal mindset rather than simply raising risks, and effective communication skills. Without ethics, one cannot succeed in any position or add real value to the company. These qualities are essential for building trust and ensuring success in the in-house role.
