About

The business and legal affairs team of Viacom International Media Networks – Americas operates without borders as one integrated team with several geographic locations. Larissa Zagustin, senior vice president, general counsel for the Americas, leads the team of 25 lawyers with eight in Miami, ten in Argentina, three in Mexico and four in Brazil. Viacom, the international media and production company, recently launched Viacom International Studios by developing key content partnerships with global players in the entertainment industry such as Amazon and Netflix among others. Last year, Viacom reached an agreement to make a wide range of its TV channels and content available to subscribers of broadband and mobile service in Latin America. It was a milestone for Viacom, marking the first time it had struck a deal for all its flagship international channels, video on demand and streaming apps with a mobile carrier. Rainer Lorenzo was part of the team that negotiated the deal and was responsible for its subsequent documentation. The team’s lead lawyer in Mexico, Mariana Miyuki Velazquez, managed key productions including important Viacom tent poles securing all the needed rights for important events such as The MTV Millennial Awards 2018 (Mexico), with more than 850 million votes and almost 12,000 attendants in Mexico City, the Kids Choice Awards Mexico 2018 and an important production of MTV Unplugged Molotov. Additionally, in 2016 Viacom acquired the important Argentinean broadcast channel Telefe. The full legal team lead by Fernando Varela, leader of the legal team in Argentina, was a fundamental component for the integration of Telefe, and its intellectual property, in to the global company of Viacom. Now the team in Argentina continue to help the Miami team lead the Viacom International Studios business. Zagustin highlights that, ‘the intersection between technology, communication and entertainment has reshaped our company. Our organisation faced the challenge of adapting its business practices while finding ways to be able to serve new market demands for content consumption. Pivoting from content distribution to content creation, from TV distributors to telecom providers and digital over the top deliveries. Those challenges also affected the business and legal affairs department, as we needed to rapidly transfer best practices to our regional offices and business executives’.
