What are the most significant cases, projects or transactions that you and your legal team have recently been involved in?

Over the past year, our legal team has been actively engaged in supporting our organization, which comprises over 2,000 employees in Thailand. Despite the absence of specific high-profile projects, our team has consistently provided comprehensive legal support across various departments and functions. This includes advising on regulatory compliance, employment law, and contractual matters. Additionally, I have extended my support to our operations in Singapore.

Our team’s ability to manage the legal needs of such a large workforce is a testament to our efficiency and dedication. We have focused on fostering strong relationships with other departments, enabling us to proactively address legal issues before they escalate. This collaborative approach has been instrumental in maintaining smooth operations and mitigating potential risks.

How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

During periods of instability or crisis, my approach to managing legal aspects centers around three key principles: proactive risk management, clear communication and resilience.

Proactive Risk Management: We prioritize identifying potential legal risks early and developing comprehensive mitigation strategies. This involves closely monitoring changes in regulations and geopolitical developments that could impact our operations. By staying ahead of potential issues, we can implement measures to protect the organization’s interests.

Clear Communication: Effective communication is crucial during crises. We ensure that all stakeholders are kept informed about the legal implications of the situation and the steps being taken to address them. This transparency helps build trust and ensures that everyone is aligned in their efforts to navigate the crisis.

Resilience: Flexibility and resilience are essential in responding to rapidly changing circumstances. Our legal team is trained to adapt quickly to new challenges, whether they arise from regulatory changes, market shifts, or unforeseen events. We work closely with other departments as partners to develop agile solutions that maintain compliance while supporting business continuity.

What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?

A modern in-house counsel must possess a blend of legal expertise, business acumen, adaptability and trust & partnership.

Legal Expertise: A deep understanding of the law is fundamental. In-house counsel must stay updated on legal developments and be able to apply this knowledge to protect the organization’s interests.

Business Acumen: Understanding the business is crucial. In-house counsel should be able to align legal strategies with business objectives, providing advice that supports growth and innovation.

Adaptability: The ability to adapt to changing circumstances and think creatively is vital. In-house counsel should be able to navigate regulatory landscapes with a business-focused approach, finding innovative solutions to legal challenges.

Trust and Partnership: Building trust and strong partnerships within the organization is essential. In-house counsel must foster collaboration, build networks, and be a reliable partner to business clients, ensuring effective communication and mutual support.

What have you done to further diversity objectives in your organisation?

As a PRIDE sponsor, I have been actively involved in promoting diversity and inclusion within our organization. We have awareness programs to educate employees about the importance of diversity and inclusion. These sessions help foster a culture of respect and understanding across all levels of the organization. Our leadership team is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion. We lead by example, demonstrating our commitment through our actions and decisions. By championing diversity and inclusion, we aim to create a workplace where everyone can thrive and contribute to the organization’s success.
