Key projects that I have been involved in over the past 12 months:
Over the past 12 months, I’ve had the privilege of leading a highly skilled legal team at reMarkable through a number of strategically significant projects, each contributing to the company’s continued global growth and innovation. While I’ve played a coordinating and strategic role, I want to emphasise that the impact has truly been the result of strong collaboration within the legal team and across departments. A major highlight of the year was the successful launch of the reMarkable Paper Tablet Pro in September. Our legal team played a central role in safeguarding the confidentiality of the launch while ensuring timely protection of our intellectual property portfolio through patents, designs, and trade marks. This work was critical to supporting our competitive position in a rapidly evolving market.
In parallel, we’ve supported reMarkable’s international expansion, particularly into India and key retail markets such as New Zealand, Australia, the Netherlands, and Germany. The legal team led the contractual negotiations with third-party distributors and ensured compliance with local legal frameworks.
With our global footprint expanding, we have established subsidiaries in our core markets, including the US, EU, and UK. This restructuring required extensive migration of contracts to ensure legal and tax compliance across jurisdictions.
Lastly, in the face of escalating trade tensions, the legal team conducted a comprehensive review of our position under customs legislation, addressing issues such as customs valuation, product classification, and country of origin. Anticipating these changes and working cross-functionally to mitigate their impact has been a key area of focus for our team over the past year.
The most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel:
In my view, the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel go well beyond legal expertise. Today’s in-house lawyers must work closely with the business, understanding not only the internal mechanics, but also the broader external landscape in which the company operates.
At reMarkable, this means being a true business partner — someone who understands the commercial context, anticipates risks, and proactively delivers pragmatic, solution-oriented advice that helps the company move forward. Strong communication skills and the ability to translate complex legal issues into actionable guidance are absolutely essential.
But perhaps most importantly, success in this role is not an individual accomplishment. For me, building and nurturing a strong legal team that shares a clear purpose, direction, and set of values is fundamental. At reMarkable, we’ve worked hard to create a legal function that is both commercially attuned and legally sound, and I see that as the cornerstone of our contribution to the company’s success.
Trends in the legal and business world:
A notable trend is the rapidly evolving regulatory environment across jurisdictions. Compliance requirements are becoming more complex and dynamic. The geopolitical developments are also posing real challenges, especially for companies with global supply chains. Legal teams must stay attuned to these shifts, as they can quickly impact tariffs, customs classifications, and market access.
