Career Biography
Tracy Preston joined Macy’s, Inc. in January 2024 as chief legal officer and corporate secretary. She is responsible for a broad range of legal affairs, litigation, and compliance for the organization, including employment, real estate, credit, commercial and regulatory compliance, enterprise security, and internal audit. Additionally, she serves as the legal advisor to senior leadership and the board of directors.
Preston has three decades of experience counseling global apparel and retail companies on strategic, business, operational and tactical matters. Prior to joining Macy’s, Inc., she served as chief compliance officer, chief legal officer and corporate secretary of HanesBrands Inc.
Before that, she held the same titles at Neiman Marcus Group. Earlier in her career, she held several key legal positions at Levi Strauss & Co. Before transitioning in-house, she was a partner at Orrick and worked at other law firms such as Latham & Watkins; Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold; and Baker & McKenzie. She served on the global Board of Directors of the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) holding several officer positions, including Global Board Chair. Currently, she is a member of the Georgetown University Board of Directors.
Preston has been widely recognized for her outstanding leadership and contributions to the legal profession. In 2025, she was included in the Legal 500’s GC PowerList (New York), and in 2024, she was honored as one of the Most Influential Lawyers in Corporate America. Her accolades also include being named one of the Most Influential Black Lawyers by Savoy magazine in 2022, and in 2019, she was recognized by Moves Magazine as a Power Woman and by Black Enterprise Magazine as one of the Most Powerful Women in Corporate America. Additionally, she received the Corporate Counsel Award for Outstanding Community Service from D CEO Magazine, was named ACC-DFW’s 2019 Outstanding GC of the Year (Mid-Sized Legal Department) and was recognized as one of the Dallas Business Journal’s Women in Business in 2015.
That same year, her team earned a spot on the GC Powerlist: U.S. Teams. Her board and executive committee service in community organizations includes, among others, the Board of Directors of the Dallas Theater Center, TITAS/Unbound, the Board of Directors of the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas, the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum, the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights (SF), the Cerebral Palsy Center of Oakland, the Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF), the BASF Foundation, and State Bar of California, Antitrust and Unfair Competition Section. Preston holds a J.D. from the University of Virginia and a bachelor’s degree in international relations from Georgetown University .
