John Hamlin is the Global Chief Employment Counsel for Marsh, where he leads the employment law group serving all Marsh businesses, including Marsh Risk, Mercer, Guy Carpenter, and Oliver Wyman. Marsh employs over 95,000 colleagues worldwide, advising clients in 130 countries on risk, strategy, and people. Under John’s leadership, the employment law team manages employment, benefits, and restrictive covenant litigation and provides counsel on a broad range of labour and employment matters. The team has received global recognition for its achievements.

John joined Marsh (then Marsh McLennan) in 2002. Prior to that, he was Of Counsel at Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP and began his legal career at Wiggin & Dana. He also served as a law clerk to the Honourable B. Avant Edenfield of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia. John earned his J.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Law, where he was Editor-in-Chief of The Connecticut Journal of International Law. He holds an undergraduate degree and a master’s degree in English literature from the College of Wooster and the University of Connecticut, respectively.

A Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, John serves on the Editorial Board of International Employment Lawyer, the Advisory Board of the American Employment Law Council, and the Steering Committee of the Litigation Series Forum on International Employment Law. He was the recipient of the 2024 IEL Award from International Employment Lawyer for In-house Employment Lawyer of the Year. He resides in Connecticut with his husband and serves on the Board of Music Theatre of Connecticut.
