What are the projects that you are most proud of working on over the past 12 months?

As the role of associate general counsel was newly established in Europe, it came with unique challenges and opportunities to build a robust legal framework from the ground up. One of the most rewarding projects was the creation of a structured and cohesive legal framework for our European operations. This involved setting up comprehensive compliance programs, drafting and implementing new policies, and ensuring that all our legal practices were aligned with both local and international regulations. The aim was to streamline processes and reduce risks. Another project that stands out is the effort to strengthen internal collaboration across various departments. By fostering a culture of open communication and partnership, we ensured that legal considerations were integrated into the decision-making process from the outset. This proactive approach enabled us to anticipate and mitigate potential legal issues, thereby supporting the company’s strategic objectives more effectively.

What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?

The role of an in-house counsel has expanded beyond traditional legal duties to encompass a wide range of skills and attributes. By combining legal expertise with business acumen, strategic thinking, and effective communication, in-house counsel can provide invaluable support to their organisations. Ethical judgment, adaptability, and a proactive approach to problem-solving further enhance their ability to navigate the complexities of the corporate world. As the legal and business landscapes continue to evolve, these attributes will remain essential for the success of modern in-house counsel.

How can general counsel foster a corporate culture that supports ESG principles and compliance across all levels of the organisation?

A general counsel should lead by example, championing ESG values and showing everyone from the boardroom to the front line why these principles matter. Creating strong, clear, and easy-to-understand policies that align with ESG goals is crucial, and these policies need to be communicated effectively across the organisation.

What do you think is the greatest innovation you have enacted in the past year?

Reflecting on the past year, the most significant innovation enacted has been the enhancement of internal collaboration. This initiative has not only bolstered our legal department, but also has positioned the legal department as a proactive and integral part of the company’s overall strategy.
