How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

First and foremost, I believe in empowering my team to navigate periods of uncertainty with confidence. By identifying and leveraging each member’s strengths, I assign responsibilities strategically to ensure alignment with our objectives and optimal execution. Our legal strategy consistently prioritises closing high-value transactions while safeguarding the Bank from legal and regulatory risks, ensuring resilience and alignment with the broader business strategy.

What are the major cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?

Recently, I led the design and implementation of the Bank’s legal strategy to mitigate risks arising from FINCEN’s sanctions affecting Mexican financial institutions. This effort involved close coordination with various internal teams—including compliance, bankers, operations, and treasury—to ensure regulatory alignment and protect the Bank’s operations and reputation.

Additionally, since 2023, I have been responsible for overseeing the legal aspects of the transition of reference rates—SOFR and TIIE de Fondeo—and for implementing, from a legal standpoint, the Bank’s diversification strategy in its derivatives product offering.

Which law firms are you regularly instructing?

We regularly work with a select group of firms, including Galicia, Ritch Mueller, Villanueva Ortiz, and Cuatrecasas, among others. Our approach is to build long-term partnerships with trusted advisors. The choice of firm for each transaction depends primarily on client expectations, industry-specific expertise, and a balance between cost-efficiency and speed in drafting and closing legal documentation.
