How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
In sum: Improvise, adapt, overcome
Periods of instability are more common than one might expect, so I approach them with a calm and methodical mindset: first assessing the impact, risks, and potential damage, then making informed and well-organised decisions. Understanding the problem well is half the solution. I work closely with the business units and senior management to ensure an integrated and balanced response, always thinking creatively (but within regulatory limits) to find practical solutions. For me, the legal function should never be seen as a bottleneck but as a strategic partner that enables the organisation to meet its goals, prevent issues, and resolve challenges. Flexibility, collaboration, and strategic thinking are key to maintaining resilience and supporting the company’s long-term objectives.
What are the major cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?
In sum: adjust and evolve
The most significant matters I have handled recently involve responding to and implementing major regulatory changes and external developments that directly impact the financial sector. Mexico’s financial industry is dynamic and highly regulated, which requires constant vigilance and the ability to anticipate and adapt to upcoming legal and market changes. My work focuses on ensuring that the bank remains compliant while also supporting business initiatives and long-term strategic plans. This includes leveraging new technologies and partnering closely with operational and business teams to ensure that legal considerations strengthen, rather than slow down, the organisation’s growth and innovation.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
In sum: Think long-term and consider all stakeholders.
The organisation has integrated sustainability practices into its core strategy through a robust ESG framework and making it part of the DNA. This includes adopting responsible lending policies, financing green projects, and performing relevant risk assessments in the daily decisions. As in-house counsel, I play a key role in ensuring these initiatives are aligned with local regulations and international standards. I advise on the development of new products, ensuring regulatory compliance and that financial operations help the business and operations ensuring that ESG matters have a palpable actionable and real impact, and not merely a statement on paper.
How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment
In sum: Open dialogue, no bias
In the legal department, we try to create a culture of equity by focusing on the merits and results, through hiring and professional development processes, ensuring there is no bias. I also encourage open dialogue and create spaces for all the team to share perspectives and experiences.
