Francisco Javier Ureña Anguiano
Sr. corporate attorney | International Motors Mexico
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
Always viewing these moments of instability or crisis as areas of opportunity. The automotive industry, of which I am a part, has been involved in various conflicts arising from political decisions, both domestic and, above all, foreign. Today, global policies on international trade have greatly affected the industry in general: while this can be seen as a crisis, we see it as an opportunity to reinvent ourselves through innovation. This will allow us to better adapt to such dynamic realities.
What are the major cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?
First, regulatory operations with trucks, resulting from various changes made by the Mexican government in terms of procedures and legal terms. Second, support for construction, expansion, and regulatory controls at our assembly plant, which has been one of the largest investments in the industry in recent years.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
It is very important to generate a favorable impact not only on the industry, but also on the environment, by being more efficient in achieving objectives, both commercially and environmentally. The legal department is heavily involved in working efficiently to achieve the objectives set by the corporation, using as few resources as possible.
How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?
Definitely looking solely at capacity. We all think differently, and the key lies in respect and, as such, the inclusion of all ideas, however diverse they may be, in order to reach a middle ground where the team’s objectives are achieved.
Which legal tech organisations or products are helping you in your role?
We have developed process automation systems and implemented computer-based regulatory controls in order to maintain complete and strict control over documents and ensure compliance with obligations.
