Legal director | Alshaya Group
Team size: 15
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
Having a small core solid team supported by necessary staff (which can be reduced in times of crisis or cost savings) is the key for a sustainable adequate level of services.
What factors influence your team’s decision to use external legal services versus handling matters in-house, and what criteria are used to evaluate their performance?
This is not straightforward. We of course always try to add value to the business including in matters relating relating to when and which external etc. We use external counsel in particular in matters require more expertise than what we have in house or for practical reasons e.g. in jurisdictions where only a national lawyer can attend before the court or in matters with a great importance to the business to ensure correct and quick desirable outcome.
How does your team contribute to the overall business strategy of the company? Can you share an example of a recent legal-led initiative that had a significant impact?
We are always trying to support the company to implement its strategy. If the company decides to expand, we help forming new companies. If the company is forced to shrink for any reason, we help liquidating entities and manage litigation etc. The example I can now think of is the education of relevant teams re labour laws, safe ways to end employment contracts and to also flagging out again the consequences of not correctly ending such contracts in order to manage expectations and to ensure informed decisions.
