Career Biography

James Murray is head of legal and company secretary with RSA Insurance Ireland DAC (“RSA”)/123.ie, now part of the Intact Financial Corporation. He is an experienced legal and governance professional with over 30 years’ experience across a range of industry sectors.

Qualifying with A&L Goodbody, Murray subsequently worked as a commercial litigator with Arthur Cox, with responsibility for managing a wide range of commercial litigation cases including contractual disputes, competition law, and administrative law/judicial review cases.

Murray moved to in-house legal practice in 2007, first with Readymix PLC and joined RSA in 2011, leading the provision of all legal and governance supports. His RSA role involves the management of all commercial (non-claims) legal matters for one of Ireland’s leading insurance companies. This includes commercial contracts, M&A activity, and legal support to all functions around the business including Procurement, Finance and Sales. This includes the sourcing and management of external counsel where required.

Murray is also responsible for corporate governance, leading management support to the RSA Insurance Ireland board and committees (audit, risk nominations and remuneration) and all Irish subsidiaries. His term as company secretary has coincided with increased oversight from the Central Bank of Ireland (CBI) and the production of top-class board papers, minutes and associated documentation is required to meet CBI requirements.

Murray was appointed to the governing authority (board) of University of Galway in 2025, and chairs their Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee. He is also a current member of the In House and Public Sector Committee of the Law Society of Ireland.
