What are the most significant cases, projects or transactions that you and/or your legal team have recently been involved in?

As an infrastructure company, Tata Projects Ltd. (TPL) handles a significant volume of claims, many of which are disputed and proceed to arbitration under the agreed dispute resolution clause. These claims often involve government bodies and public sector organisations and can be of substantial value.

Our legal team manages the entire arbitration process end-to-end, including the selection of arbitrators, appointment of counsel and law firms, and oversight of all related legal activities to ensure efficient and effective resolution.

  How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

We have a strong and diverse legal team with deep expertise across multiple domains. Under my leadership, we have consistently achieved successful outcomes while adhering to the highest ethical standards and full compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.

Winning is never pursued at the cost of integrity – our commitment is to conduct every matter legally and transparently. Even in cases where the outcome is not in our favor, we ensure that our processes remain compliant and principled.

What strategies do you employ to ensure the successful digital transformation of a legal department while maintaining compliance with your country’s data protection laws?

Our IT department manages this internally. We provide our requirements to the internal IT team, which then assists in developing the necessary systems. We have implemented several digital processes for claims management, enabling easy data access, real-time monitoring, MIS reporting, and standardised data handling.

How can general counsel foster a corporate culture that supports ESG principles and compliance across all levels of the organisation?

We have clearly defined ESG targets, and every department—including Legal—incorporates these objectives into its goals. Non-achievement of these targets directly impacts our ESG rating, which is why we take them very seriously.

Within the Legal function, we actively support ESG initiatives by minimising printing, ensuring full compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, and driving their adoption across the company.

What is a cause, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about? Why is this?

I have always strived for excellence in everything I do and expect the same level of commitment from my team. At the same time, I strongly encourage continuous learning, whether through attending seminars, participating in panel discussions, or speaking at industry forums.

Law is constantly evolving, and it is essential for us to stay ahead of legal developments to deliver the best outcomes and maintain a future-ready approach.
