What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past 12 months?
As legislation continues to evolve rapidly to keep pace with new technology, our legal team remains committed to effectively handling new legal requirements while supporting the daily needs of the business. The implementation of major legislative frameworks such as NIS2 Directive, DORA Regulation, AI Act, Digital Accessibility Act demanded constant monitoring, proper update of the involved parties and adoption of new procedures. At the same time, the transposition into the Greek legislation of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) reshaped the regulatory framework and introduced complex ESG obligations that extended beyond conventional legal scopes. These new legal challenges went hand in hand with the core tasks of the legal department – providing legal advice, reviewing contracts, supporting business in the decision-making process. With the proper organisation and the prerequired agility, our legal team managed to meet both new and existing demands effectively.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?
In an environment shaped by constant legal evolution, agility becomes an indispensable asset. Yet, agility alone is not enough. It must be supported by the legal counsel’s ability to take a deep dive into unfamiliar subjects, to understand the essence of new regulations, and to adapt quickly. This requires not only legal expertise, but also the ability to identify the underlying legal concepts that remain beneath new and complex regulatory frameworks, to ground innovative obligations in solid legal foundations. This allows the legal ream to remain flexible but also steady, forward-looking but also rooted. To make this possible, the legal counsel should be also able to recognise each team member’s talents and inclinations, to ensure that each work is assigned to the person who can contribute the most.
Based on your experiences in the past year, are there any trends in the legal or business world that you are keeping an eye on, of which you think other in-house lawyers should be mindful?
Our experience has shown that the future will be full of surprises from a climate change perspective, with unpredictable events becoming more frequent and severe. In this context, a company’s focus must shift toward resilience and business continuity. This means ensuring that operations can be maintained even under extreme conditions, and that employees remain safe, protected, and supported. Legal departments should play a key role in shaping strategies that align with emerging climate-related regulations and risk frameworks, while also reinforcing internal policies that prioritise preparedness and adaptability.
