Jorge Alvarado is a distinguished Ecuadorian lawyer with twenty-five years of leadership in banking law, financial regulation, corporate governance and ESG, compliance, anti-money laundry, institutional affairs and sustainability.
As Legal Vice President, he has been a key architect of the bank’s legal and regulatory strategy since 2001. His guidance has been instrumental in reinforcing governance structures, strengthening compliance frameworks, and positioning the institution at the forefront of regional and international sustainable finance standards.
Beyond his institutional role, Jorge serves in influential global forums. Since 2024, he has been appointed as South America Representative to the Banking Board of the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), where he contributes to high-level policy dialogue on responsible banking, climate-risk governance, net-zero transitions, and ESG frameworks. His appointment reflects his credibility in advancing sustainable finance agendas and his recognised leadership.
He also acts as Delegate to the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR at the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), participating in international discussions on commercial arbitration, dispute resolution innovation, and cross-border governance. He is qualified arbitrator by the Arbitration Center of the Chamber of Commerce of Quito and Universidad de Especialidades Espíritu Santo.
From 2017 to 2019, he served as President of the Latin American Legal-Banking Committee of FELABAN, where he coordinated regional initiatives aimed at harmonising regulatory and legal standards in the banking industry. Also he is Past President of Ecuadorian Legal Banking Committee of ASOBANCA.
Jorge’s professional trajectory is complemented by a strong academic foundation. He is completing a Doctorate in Contract Law at the University of Salamanca (2018–2026), where his research integrates commercial contracting and economic law. He holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Commercial Law from the University of California, Davis, which deepened his expertise in international transactions, comparative regulation, and cross-border commercial frameworks.
Within Produbanco, he has also served as Secretary General since 2014, overseeing corporate books, governance processes, and the bank’s most sensitive institutional documentation. His work is marked by the ability to merge legal precision with strategic insight—anticipating regulatory trends, designing governance solutions, and guiding the institution through increasingly complex supervisory and ESG-driven environments.
His experience extends to arbitration, coaching, legal education, and thought leadership. As a professor, he has taught at leading Ecuadorian universities, including Universidad San Francisco de Quito, Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar and Universidad de Especialidades Espíritu Santo, specialising in commercial law, financial regulation, and corporate governance. This blend of academic rigor, practical expertise, and executive vision gives him a uniquely holistic approach to advisory work, leadership development, and institutional strategy.
Colleagues and partners describe him as a strategic, forward-thinking leader with an exceptional ability to navigate regulatory complexity. His work at the intersection of law, governance, compliance, and sustainability consolidates his reputation as one of Ecuador’s most respected legal voices in the financial sector. Through his contributions to UNEP FI, the ICC, and regional banking associations, he continues shaping the evolution of responsible finance and legal governance across Latin America and beyond.
