General counsel | RelyOn
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
The legal strategy is aligned with the broader business strategy, and it supports and enables the execution of the overall business strategy. During periods of instability and crises being aligned with the business and updated on the changing outlook and the risks is even more important than normally, as this is significant to ensure resilience and to be duly prepared for the respective scenarios. Further, it is key to show adaptation readiness to be able to quickly re-adjust plans or re-prioritise initiatives if a change in the strategy or priorities of the business requires this. Hence, continuous communication and diligent cooperation with relevant stakeholders is always a pre-requisite and particularly during periods of instability, as this will allow the legal team to support the business in a proactive and expedient manner.
What are the major cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?
RelyOn was acquired by Mubadala Capital during the summer of 2024. This process was important for the future strategy of RelyOn and with the new owner it is possible to ensure further accelerating growth for the company. The change in ownership was affected successfully because of excellent cooperation between multiple functions in the company, including the ESG, legal and financing team, external advisors and the Polaris team.
In addition, we made several key acquisitions during 2024 and 2025. Since the chance in ownership, we have made five acquisitions. We were fortunate to acquired great companies, such as Quercus in the Netherlands, Develop Training in the UK and most recently Petroskills in the US. These acquisitions are significant add-ons to the existing RelyOn business, which will enable us to continue to support the energy transition with a broader range of best-in-class services across our global footprint.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
The mission of RelyOn is to protect people, assets and the environment. For me this mission provides a clear direction and are aligned with my personal values. This mission in embedded in our operations and in all we do.
I am fortunate as general counsel, to also be responsible for ESG area and therefore I have the privilege, together with my talented colleagues, to be driving relevant initiatives across our organisation. We have a close dialogue with our colleagues around the world and many of the best initiatives are based on suggestions from the operations locally. Initiatives that we then implement globally. Hence, the key drivers are knowing the business and the relevant stakeholders and to have an open and continuous communication across the organisation.
