What projects are you most proud to have worked on over the past 12 months?

Over the past 12 months, we are most proud of completing our Seminole work on the Trans Mountain Expansion Project (across multiple segments in Alberta and BC), the Woodfibre LNG Project (Module Offloading Facility and related services), the TliCho All Season Road, the Union Station Rehabilitation Project, the Elk Valley Resources Water Treatment Projects, the Highway 5 Bridge Replacements, and the Highway 1 Nicomen Bridge Projects for BC MOTT, as well as achieving final completion of the Southwest Calgary Ring Road project.

Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?

As a long-term in-house counsel with Kiewit, responsible for our ongoing project execution and operational affairs, I have had multiple unique experiences both within and beyond the traditional scope of ‘construction law.’ These have involved areas such as commercial law, intellectual property, First Nations/Aboriginal engagement, renewable energy, regulatory law, criminal law, and many other legal areas that arise in the course of executing marquee, nation-building projects.

Most recently, as the executive sponsor of all legal training initiatives for the company, I have been fortunate to work with our HR business partners and executive management teams to develop, implement and foster an internal training programme for all lawyers within Kiewit across North America. This ensures best-in-class service based on a thorough understanding of our core business and operational functions—not just building good lawyers, but developing lawyers knowledgeable in the work we do and the projects we build. This programme also includes evaluating and integrating how AI fits into the evolving legal landscape.

How does your team contribute to the overall business strategy of the company?

As members of our operational management and execution teams, we are fully integrated into the day-to-day business planning, strategic outlooks and forecasting of future project opportunities and current project challenges to look around corners and anticipate the needs of our business and our leaders.  We are involved from the very outset of project development opportunities to the final close out and completion of all our projects.
