Chief operating officer and general counsel | Insight Productions

What projects are you most proud to have worked on over the past 12 months?
I’m incredibly proud of Insight Productions’ continued evolution and our growing presence on the global media stage – particularly our successful continued expansion into U.S. productions. While this strategic pivot has been years in development, the past year has marked a significant milestone, with the company producing multiple high-profile programs for major U.S. broadcasters and streaming platforms, including Yes, Chef!, Crime Scene Kitchen, and Top Chef. As the media landscape evolves, the production deals in this space have become increasingly complex, involving multilayered negotiations and nuanced legal frameworks. I’m proud to say that our team has consistently met these challenges head-on – navigating the intricacies with expertise, adaptability, and a strong understanding of both the business and creative sides of these productions.
Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?
Over my 13 years at Insight Productions, I’ve had the privilege of contributing to projects that helped shape and celebrate Canadian identity and culture. From The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration to more than a dozen Juno Awards broadcasts, I’ve been part of productions that resonate deeply with Canadians. I worked on feature documentaries exploring the Canadian roots of Greenpeace (which premiered on opening day at the Sundance Film Festival) and the legacy of iconic singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot. I also contributed to Stronger Together, the COVID-19 benefit concert that raised over $9mn for Food Banks Canada. As lawyers, our work can sometimes feel behind-the-scenes or fleeting, but I take pride in knowing that these projects will endure as meaningful chapters in Canada’s cultural story.
How does your team contribute to the overall business strategy of the company?
Simple, building Relationships. At this point in time, as outlined above, our business strategy is focused squarely on growth – whether by deepening partnerships with existing clients or attracting new ones. When it comes to the former, the foundation of lasting relationships is built on trust, respect, and transparency. These values are at the core of how our legal team operates. While the results of individual negotiations matter, our legal team places equal value on fostering win-win outcomes that serve the long-term health of the relationship. We believe lasting success comes not just from closing deals, but from the integrity and collaboration that shape them.
