Conni Gibson
Chief legal officer and corporate secretary | Interac Group
Legal team size: 50 (Legal, Compliance & Regulatory)
What projects are you most proud to have worked on over the past 12 months?
Diversity, equity and inclusion are deeply important to me. I’ve focused on launching targeted initiatives, like our Indigenous Summer Student Program, opportunities for Black students interested in law, and building a diverse team, to address representation gaps in the legal industry. These programs are about more than offering summer positions to students, they’re creating a sustainable pipeline for underrepresented groups in law. With strong leadership support, advocacy, and dedicated resources, I am committed to making DEI a core part of who we are and how we grow.
I’m proud to be leading the creation of Interac’s first ever ESG program. Building our ESG program is especially meaningful to me because of my own, and Interac’s, commitment to community.
I am proud to have led our team’s legal innovation strategy. Our legal department has redefined the way it works by introducing AI tools, new technology, agile practices, and value-based billing with our external counsel firms. These changes have boosted efficiency, and strengthened collaboration, helping us shift from being just a service provider group to a true strategic partner aligned with the company’s priorities.
I am also leading the redesign and implementation of our enterprise compliance program from the ground up, which has played a transformative role in embedding accountability across Interac.
Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?
Throughout my career I have been fortunate to take on mandates well outside my comfort zone and direct skill set, which has shaped me into the leader I am today. Early on, I built a reputation as someone who transforms and elevates teams, which led to a series of unique opportunities. One of the most formative was a four-year assignment to New York to lead US Capital Markets legal team. Although it was a smaller team and a new market for me, I approached it as an opportunity to broaden my skills, reimagine the role, and deliver impact in a high-stakes environment. That experience, along with other career opportunities, where I moved between large and small teams, and across different portfolios and areas of practice, taught me how to adapt quickly, drive continuous improvement, build strong teams and see opportunity in challenge. It also positioned me well for my current GC role at Interac with a truly rounded perspective on how legal, compliance and regulatory functions must evolve to meet business needs.
How does your team contribute to the overall business strategy of the company?
The Interac legal team contributes to the overall business strategy of Interac by focusing on understanding not just the legal issue at hand, but also the business objectives and challenges, and then working to deliver that outcome through thoughtful, creative and practical legal support. My team’s philosophy is rooted in partnership and the belief that legal advice is most valuable when we are business partners.
We support the business to ensure that Interac’s most important strategic objectives are achieved. This includes leading legal work on all aspects of major new product rollouts. The legal team supports the business with leadership and collaboration, which are a driving force behind rapid growth within the organisation. The client strategy is simple, effective, and consistently aligned with business success.
