Leola Pon
Associate Director of Education, Organizational Transformation, Accountability, and Legal | Toronto District School Board
What projects are you most proud to have worked on over the past 12 months?
The TDSB Legal team has been working closely with external counsel as lead plaintiff in a groundbreaking claim against tech giants Meta Platforms Inc. (Facebook and Instagram), Snap Inc. (Snapchat), and ByteDance Ltd. (TikTok) for disruption to the education system. We allege that these companies have negligently designed and marketed addictive products that have interfered with TDSB’s mandate to enhance student achievement and well-being.
In March 2025, an Ontario court dismissed the defendants’ motion to strike, allowing the case to proceed to trial. Through this action, we hope to see meaningful change within the industry to reduce mental health harms to youth and minimise disruptions to the education system.
Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?
In late 2020, together with 12 other Canadian General Counsel, I co-founded the National GC Network — a first-of-its-kind association of racialised and Indigenous GCs, CLOs, and senior legal leaders. Led by Julia Shin Doi (then General Counsel at Toronto Metropolitan University, now a Superior Court judge) and supported by many across the legal industry, our goal was to build a community of legal executives united by a shared commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and executive leadership.
I chair the Events Planning Committee, which is responsible for our annual conference, spring summit, and numerous other events throughout the year. Through these initiatives, I’ve had the opportunity to form strong friendships and network with legal executives across the country. More importantly, many members have shared that they feel a genuine sense of belonging, authenticity, and connection when attending our events. We design each event thoughtfully to be as inclusive as possible, and I am very proud of how far we’ve come in just a few short years.
How does your team contribute to the overall business strategy of the company?
Our Legal team plays a critical role as strategic advisers to the senior leadership team and has done excellent work in proactively supporting our senior, school, and business leaders through significant challenges. We lead professional development sessions, spearhead or collaborate on both legal and non-legal projects, and are recognised as trusted problem-solvers.
We are closely connected with our clients through our shared goal of serving students, and we have built a strong reputation for service and reliability. Although we are a small team relative to the size of our organisation, our impact is substantial, consistently demonstrating the strong value that in-house counsel bring to the table. Each member contributes expertise in different areas of law, and this diversity of knowledge and experience has served the TDSB exceptionally well.
