How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

In times of instability or crisis, my approach is rooted in being not only a legal advisor, but also a strategic business partner. This means walking alongside the business rather than operating as a separate function — anticipating scenarios, mitigating risks before they materialise, and providing calm, clear direction when challenges arise. In the volatile context of Bolivia, crises can escalate quickly; therefore, I focus on proactive engagement, scenario planning, and fostering strong internal trust so that the legal department is seen as an enabler rather than a blocker. My strategy is fully aligned with the company’s broader business objectives, ensuring that legal decisions support commercial resilience, safeguard reputation, and uphold compliance and ethics at every step. This synergy allows the legal function to act as a stabilising force, turning uncertainty into opportunities for structured and sustainable growth.

What are the main cases or transactions that you have been involved in recently?

Over the past year, I have led numerous high-impact matters. Among the most significant are two major labour restructurings, which included the closure of two operations — one being a fully unionised plant. Successfully navigating this in Bolivia’s challenging labour and union environment required robust legal planning, delicate negotiation, and unwavering adherence to both local laws and the company’s compliance and ethical standards. Additionally, I played a key role in structuring complex financial mechanisms to sustain operations amid the current scarcity of foreign currency, enabling the company to maintain liquidity and operational continuity. Finally, I have driven the implementation of compliance programs and modernisation initiatives within the legal function and the broader business, embedding a culture of transparency, agility, and risk-based decision-making that positions the company for long-term resilience.

What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?

Sustainability is at the heart of our corporate strategy. Our company has implemented initiatives such as water programs, circular economy projects, and sustainable sourcing across our value chain. As General Counsel, my role is to ensure that each of these initiatives is supported by a solid legal framework that complies with national legislation, mitigates regulatory risks, and allows for scalable implementation. I work closely with operational teams to structure partnerships, secure permits, and embed contractual safeguards that protect both the initiative’s integrity and the company’s reputation. Beyond compliance, I view the legal function as a catalyst — helping the business turn sustainability from a concept into measurable, legally sound actions.

What do you see as the major legal challenges for businesses in Bolivia over the next five years, and how are you preparing to address them?

The main challenges will stem from the country’s economic instability, foreign currency scarcity, and evolving political landscape, which will likely bring shifts in regulation and enforcement priorities. My preparation is based on anticipation: studying the trajectories of other economies with similar conditions, mapping potential regulatory changes, and developing contingency strategies that can be adapted swiftly. This includes strengthening contractual frameworks, diversifying operational risk, and maintaining an agile compliance posture. In short, preparation means ensuring the company is never caught off-guard, no matter how the political or economic environment evolves.
