Head of Legal Department | Doppelmayr

Team size: 6

What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past 12 months?

Doppelmayr is the world market leader for rope-propelled mobility. Our department provides legal support for the largest and most important cable car projects and examins them for relevant risks.

What strategies do you employ to ensure the successful digital transformation of a legal department while maintaining compliance with your country’s data protection laws?

The digital transformation of a legal department requires a careful strategy to both increase efficiency and comply with data protection laws. The use of cloud technologies, AI-powered contract analysis, and digital document management systems can increase efficiency. It is important to choose providers that offer GDPR-compliant solutions. Employees must be trained regularly to understand and apply data protection guidelines and digital best practices. The digital departments within the company must be audited to ensure that new digital services are used in compliance with data protection regulations, which is something we are currently doing in our company. Involving data protection officers and IT security experts helps identify and minimize risks early on.

What do you think sets you apart from other in-house counsel?

In most cases, our unique product and the international nature of our business set us apart from other corporate lawyers. Because we are a small team, every one of us is responsible for projects all around the world. This requires us to deal with a wide variety of legal systems and cultures. Our global network of lawyers helps us to understand and manage the different legal risks in all markets. When a terrific new cable car is finally installed and is profitable, we can be proud that we played a crucial role in making it happen.

What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?

A modern corporate lawyer should have a diverse mix of legal expertise, entrepreneurial thinking, and technological competence. This means a thorough knowledge of the law and the ability to analyse complex legal issues. But you also have to look beyond the legal horizon and understand how legal decisions influence business strategy. And modern companies expect not only legal advice, but also ethical guidance. A corporate lawyer should therefore help to promote a responsible corporate culture.
