What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past 12 months?

My team and I have been working on the following key projects: the conceptual development and implementation of current and upcoming ESG and digital legislation; the establishment and rollout of an end-to-end process to ensure compliance with recent amendments to product law; the deployment of a digital contract management tool; and the implementation of a paperless, in-app receipt solution.

What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?

Firstly, adaptability is paramount. Legal professionals must be able to pivot quickly in response to changing regulations, market conditions, and organizational needs. This agility allows them to provide timely and relevant advice, ensuring that their companies remain compliant and competitive.

Additionally, a strong understanding of technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), is increasingly vital. In-house counsel should be familiar with AI tools that can streamline legal research, contract review, and risk assessment. Recent developments have shown that AI will not replace in-house counsel, at least not in the next 4-5 years. Leveraging these technologies not only enhances efficiency but also allows counsel to focus on more strategic tasks rather than routine, time-consuming processes.

Furthermore, and this has not changed over the past years, excellent communication skills are critical. In-house counsel must be able to convey complex legal concepts in a clear and concise manner to non-legal stakeholders, facilitating informed decision-making.

Lastly, a proactive mindset is crucial. Counsel should anticipate legal challenges and develop strategies to mitigate risks before they escalate. By combining adaptability, technological acumen, strong communication, and a proactive approach, modern in-house counsel can effectively navigate the complexities of today’s business environment.
