Senior Legal Counsel & Internal Group DPO | IXOPAY

Team size: 3

What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past 12 months?

Key projects centred around IXOPAY’s continued international growth and internal transformation. A major focus was the development of a new harmonised legal framework to improve both scalability and streamlined compliance for our global client contracts. The framework aligns key contractual terms while incorporating localised privacy provisions.

One highlight was negotiating a seven-figure-euro enterprise agreement with a leading German automotive company, which required close collaboration across legal, technical, and commercial teams to address cross-border regulatory and data protection requirements while ensuring commercial and operational feasibility.

What I personally valued most was contributing to our “Culture Crew.” Following our group-internal merger, our ten-person cross-functional working group defined IXOPAY’s vision, mission and values together with management. The outcomes provide a clear foundation for company-wide alignment and decision-making.

What do you think sets you apart from other in-house counsel?

My life is shaped by two major roles: being a dad of my two little boys and being an in-house counsel. In both, the common thread is passion. As a sense of belonging, of being seen, and of helping others move forward with clarity and energy.

As in-house counsel, I see it as part of my responsibility to look beyond the legal lens: to understand what drives other teams, what excites them, what frustrates them, and where things are going well – or not. That kind of awareness is essential if legal is to act as a real partner to the business. In a nutshell: I am passionate about that mindset: stepping back, listening carefully, and supporting others without defaulting to “no”.

What strategies do you employ to ensure the successful digital transformation of a legal department while maintaining compliance with your country’s data protection laws?

Let’s face it: we’re in an ongoing process of enabling innovation while upholding legal and data protection standards. At IXOPAY, we aim for embedding legal input early into workflows using tools like Jira and Slack, to enhance seamless integration with product and operational teams.

We use AI-assisted tools to support contract drafting and documentation – but always under human review and with careful attention to data handling and confidentiality. We follow international data protection developments (and politics) closely and assess vendors with a focus on cross-border data flows, and contractual safeguards.

Internally, we particularly support transformation by promoting AI literacy and data security awareness across teams by conducting department-specific sessions that combine practical training with a focus on data protection requirements. This aims to help the business to understand the opportunities and risks of working with new tools while upholding speed and efficiency.
