Barloworld has been involved in a large number of businesses in the course of its more than 100 years in the African market, including manufacturing and mining, but has in recent years developed into a brand management company with equipment, automotive, logistics and handling subsidiaries.

Barloworld Transport and Barloworld Equipment Southern Africa made acquisitions in February and September 2016 respectively, and on both of these matters the legal team’s involvement was highly praised. Group general counsel Bruce Lange has been at Barloworld since 2006, having joined at a transitional phase for the company when it was unbundling many of its assets. Under his direction, the legal team has developed a highly-specialised, sector-specific focus to help the company begin the next phase of its journey.

Lange is one of the most experienced in-house legal counsel in Africa despite only working at two companies; he also spent 15 years as a general manager at Pretoria Portland Cement Company, which shows his commitment to the company and willingness to see a project through to its completion. These are qualities that are representative of the Barloworld legal team as a whole.
