Bora Kaya, managing legal counsel, leads the legal team at GAMA Power Systems, the strategic business unit of GAMA Holding that undertakes power plant engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts. The team of three lawyers have worked alongside seven contract managers since Kaya established a claims and contracts management unit within the legal department. Ensuring the team has the required business knowledge of company operations, five of the contract managers are engineers who work under the legal department and report directly to the claims and contracts manager who is a core member of the legal team. The business nous of the team as a whole has been rewarded with the changed perception of the senior management about the capabilities of in-house lawyers, as Kaya says: ‘by engaging with the daily business of the company more than ever, delivering services wherever the unit is based, and more importantly by shifting the weight of its efforts from restitutory services to preventive services’. With a close connection with senior management the team is an integral and valued part of the steam and power producer that considers all transactional documents before sign-off.
