How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
We tackle legal challenges and aspects during periods of instability or crises with a proactive and agile philosophy. It is important to have a structured approach and secure a thorough understanding of the legal landscape.
Each situation requires different initiatives, and the dynamics vary from case to case. We believe it is important to remember that a crisis can typically not be mitigated by the legal department alone. Most cases have implications spanning across stakeholders and departments in the company.
Therefore, it is crucial to maintain close cooperation with other group functions and the business to ensure solutions that accommodate commercial needs and consider the broader perspective as well. It is also wise to be mindful of the reality that there is not necessarily a legal solution to every problem.
What are the major cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?
Our organisation has gone through a significant global growth and geographical expansion in recent years. Our legal team has been involved in several major projects globally, which has allowed us to work closely with colleagues globally, further strengthening the relationships. Each of these cases required tailored strategies and close collaboration with stakeholders to achieve our goals.
Expanding our presence in South America, the Caribbean and Asia has been significant cases, as well as establishing and building a footprint on the African continent.
We have also experienced an increase in the complexity of the regulatory frames in general and in certain emerging markets in particular. Those developments, among other factors, have leveraged the involvement of the legal function in the early phases of setting strategic and commercial goals.
What emerging technologies do you see as having the most significant impact on the legal profession in the near future, and how do you stay updated on these developments?
Emerging technologies such as AI, blockchain, and data analytics are set to have a profound impact in general and the legal profession is no exception. We foresee that it will gradually influence our requirements and expectations to external advisors, including suppliers of legal services, while we still believe in the relevance of trusted advisors for strategic and complex matters.
We have already seen the most innovative external advisors offering solutions which uses new technologies, for example, boosting efficiency and processing large and complex data to focus on enhanced value adding activities. We expect this trend to continue.
Furthermore, we follow trends and new opportunities in a legal context and as a company in a broader perspective. Our organisation has a focus on new technologies, which helps us to stay updated on new opportunities and solutions. We believe that continuous learning and adaptation are key to leveraging these technologies to improve in-house legal services and solutions and enhance efficiency for the company.
In your opinion, what are the main trends that are salient in your country currently?
Generally, we see an increasing emphasis on data protection and privacy, which is influenced by multi jurisdictional regulations, and relevant for all businesses. There is also a push towards green initiatives and climate action, and we see that the focus on sustainability and environmental policies leads to specific legislation being passed and enhanced expectations on these agendas from the market.
