How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
During periods of uncertainty, my approach centres on alignment with the business—both in managing risk and supporting long-term objectives. I believe the legal function should not simply react to instability, but play a proactive role in guiding the company through it.
At Scanntech, legal is embedded within strategic decision-making. I work closely with business leaders to ensure our legal approach doesn’t just mitigate risk but enables the company to continue moving forward with confidence. A key part of this is maintaining a sharp regulatory radar—particularly important given our presence across diverse Latin American markets. This allows us to anticipate developments rather than respond in crisis mode, ensuring we are always one step ahead.
What are the main cases or transactions that you have been involved in recently?
A recent highlight was securing a Visa International licence for our acquiring operations, complementing our existing Mastercard licence. This was a complex, multi-jurisdictional process involving stringent compliance requirements, and it significantly strengthens our capacity to scale our payments business regionally with the right legal and regulatory infrastructure in place.
I also led negotiations in Brazil related to licensing and monetising consumer transaction data collected across more than 10,000 retail points of sale. These agreements underpin our Promotions Club platform, which connects consumer brands with real-time insights and promotional tools. Structuring these deals required a careful balance between commercial priorities, data privacy obligations, and fast-evolving regulatory expectations—particularly as scrutiny of data-driven business models continues to grow across the region.
What do you see as the major legal challenges for businesses in Uruguay over the next five years, and how are you preparing to address them?
Uruguay’s legal landscape is evolving rapidly, particularly in areas such as data protection, fintech regulation, artificial intelligence, and environmental standards. As the economy becomes increasingly digital and integrated into global markets, these trends are only set to accelerate.
For companies like Scanntech, which operate at the intersection of technology and retail, staying ahead of these developments is critical. We closely monitor legislative trends, engage with regulatory bodies, and design legal frameworks that are agile enough to adapt as needed. Internally, I’ve prioritised embedding compliance into the product development lifecycle and strategic planning—ensuring we’re always ready for change, rather than caught off guard by it.
What role does the legal department play in promoting and ensuring corporate social responsibility in your organisation?
The legal department at Scanntech plays an integral role in embedding ethics, transparency, and corporate social responsibility into the core of our operations. Whether it’s overseeing how we manage data, engage suppliers, or structure contracts, our goal is to ensure that legal processes are fully aligned with the company’s values.
We’ve been actively involved in strengthening internal policies around data ethics, contributing to ESG reporting, and providing legal support for community-oriented initiatives. For us, CSR is not just a compliance requirement—it’s a strategic priority and a key driver of stakeholder trust.
