Career Biography
Barbara Musso was appointed General Counsel and Head of Legal at BBVA Uruguay at the age of 31, a milestone that positioned her as one of the youngest executives to assume such a responsibility within the bank. Prior to this, she had successfully co-led both the Legal and Human Resources departments for several years, overseeing high-impact processes such as the merger with Credit Uruguay. This experience not only demanded strong technical and regulatory expertise but also strategic thinking, adaptability, and the ability to build consensus among diverse teams in moments of organisational transformation.
Her professional career began in the Compliance area, where she gained valuable experience in regulatory monitoring, risk management, and the design of internal control mechanisms.
This early stage in Compliance provided her with a solid foundation for the broader responsibilities she would later assume, allowing her to approach legal and strategic challenges with a comprehensive understanding of governance and regulatory frameworks. Her academic formation has been consistently aligned with her professional trajectory. She earned her Law degree from Universidad Católica del Uruguay, later obtaining a Master’s in Business Law from Universidad de Montevideo, where she deepened her understanding of corporate structures and their legal frameworks. Determined to expand her perspective beyond national borders, Barbara has complemented her education with executive programs at BBVA and a Corporate Management Program from IESE Business School, experiences that reinforced her global outlook and leadership style in highly complex environments. She also contributed to the academic field with her publication “Experiencias de la venta en bloque en la ley concursal Uruguaya,” reflecting her commitment to continuous learning and to advancing legal knowledge in her jurisdiction.
In her current role as General Counsel, Barbara leads the Legal Department with a strategic and innovative vision, supported by a growing team that reflects the bank’s commitment to talent development. Under her leadership, the department has gone beyond its traditional advisory and compliance functions, taking on a proactive role in promoting modernisation and operational efficiency. Notable achievements include the implementation of the digital signature at BBVA Uruguay, a pioneering step in the bank’s digital transformation, as well as her direct involvement in labour union relations and negotiations, where she has fostered constructive dialogue while ensuring alignment with the institution’s strategic objectives.
Barbara’s career path is marked by the integration of three essential dimensions: deep legal expertise, a strategic approach to business, and an authentic commitment to people and organisational culture. Her leadership is characterised by promoting collaboration, driving innovation even within the constraints of a regulated industry, and empowering teams to achieve sustainable results.
