What are the key projects that you have been involved in over the past 12 months
I started at Sizewell C (SZC) in February 2025. Prior to this, I was Deputy General Counsel at Scotia Gas Networks (SGN). Whilst at SGN, I led on the legal aspects of the RIIO GD3 price control submission. Although price controls are cyclical, this particular submission was challenging in light of uncertainty in the gas sector.
SZC will be the first EPR nuclear power plant to be constructed under the Regulated Asset Base model, which uses both public investment and private capital. Once online, SZC will supply electricity to the equivalent of six million homes for at least 60 years. This form of funding in the nuclear sector is novel with the intention of making nuclear projects investable at the outset of construction.
I joined SZC at an extremely exciting time in the midst of the equity and debt raise programme and ahead of the Government Financial Investment Decision. Therefore, the vast majority of my time at SZC has been spent working as part of the Executive team and as General Counsel to support with this intense activity. It was hugely rewarding to secure the Government Financial Investment Decision in July with HMG taking a majority shareholding in SZC.
Construction activity had commenced on site at the end of 2024, but following months of negotiation we were also able to enter into the Civil Works Alliance which will deliver the main civils and construction elements of the project. This structure and contracting mechanism takes on board critical lessons learned from other major infrastructure projects.
Finally, a significant proportion of my time has been spent reviewing and updating the existing legal team structure and governance requirements to ensure that we are set up for success to deliver the project!
