What do you think is the greatest innovation you have enacted in the past year?

Over the past year, our legal team has been actively engaged in a number of impactful initiatives focused on leveraging technology to enhance efficiency, reduce risk, and better support the business. Two particularly significant projects involve the development and deployment of AI-powered legal assistants.

Firstly, AI Assistant for Marketing & Advertising Compliance. Recognising the increasing complexity and volume of advertising requirements across multiple jurisdictions, we collaborated with internal stakeholders and external partners to build an AI Assistant specifically designed to support the marketing team. This tool helps users navigate and filter applicable advertising regulations based on campaign type, channel, and target geography. It provides preliminary guidance, flags high-risk content, and integrates with internal approval workflows. As a result, the legal team is able to provide faster, more consistent advice at scale while empowering the business to operate with greater confidence and agility.

Secondly, NDA Assistant for Contract Triage and Playbook Review. We also launched an AI-powered NDA Assistant to streamline the handling of non-disclosure agreements. This tool answers routine questions from business users regarding NDA terms, obligations, and exceptions, and can perform first-level reviews aligned with our internal playbook. It highlights deviations from standard clauses and suggests fallback language, enabling faster turnaround times and reducing legal touchpoints for low-risk agreements. This has significantly improved efficiency, reduced review bottlenecks, and freed up legal resources for more strategic matters. These projects reflect our broader strategy of embracing AI to modernise legal operations, improve service delivery, and act as a proactive business partner. Beyond these, we continue to support a variety of commercial transactions, compliance initiatives, and strategic partnerships, with a strong emphasis on scalability and innovation.

What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?

In today’s rapidly evolving business and technology landscape, the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel extend well beyond technical legal expertise. We are expected not only to interpret the law but also to enable the business to move forward with confidence, speed, and clarity. One of the most critical attributes is the ability to simplify—to distill complex legal and regulatory issues into clear, concise, and actionable guidance that non-lawyers can readily understand. This is particularly important when supporting fast-paced functions like marketing, product, or tech, where clarity and speed are essential.

Equally important is the ability to augment our legal function by leveraging technology. This includes using AI and automation to streamline routine tasks, triage legal work, and provide scalable support to the business. By embracing these tools, we can spend more time on high-impact advisory and strategic matters.

A mindset of agility and openness to change is also key. The pace of innovation, especially with emerging technologies, demands that in-house counsel be flexible, adaptable, and proactive. We must be willing to continuously learn and evolve alongside the business.

Finally, a modern in-house counsel must be a trusted guide through uncharted territory, especially as technology continues to outpace regulation. This requires strong risk assessment capabilities, the ability to provide clear guidance amidst uncertainty, and the confidence to support the business in making informed, balanced decisions in new or ambiguous areas.

In short, today’s in-house lawyers must be strategic, tech-enabled, business-oriented partners who are just as comfortable navigating innovation as they are interpreting the law.
