My career as a lawyer
Walter Vásquez Rebaza is a lawyer with honours from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP). He holds a master’s degree with honours from PUCP and has also undertaken studies at the Complutense University of Madrid. He is currently Business Affairs Counsel for Latin America at Hitachi Rail STS and is the Founder and Managing Partner at WV LAW.
He previously served as a Senior Associate at Philippi, Pietrocarrizosa, Ferrero DU & Uría, where he worked for nearly 10 years in the areas of Construction Law, Corporate, Real Estate, and Dispute Resolution. He became a Senior Associate during his time there. He is a Member (MCIArb) of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and is listed as an arbitrator by key arbitration centres such as PUCP – CARC PUCP and AmCham-Peru.
He is a recognised legal expert in Peruvian private law and has issued and supported numerous expert opinions in both national and international arbitration proceedings.
Mr Vásquez Rebaza has worked as a university lecturer in Civil Property Law for over 13 consecutive years. He is currently a Professor of Civil Law at several of the most prestigious universities in Peru, including PUCP, the Faculty of Law at Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Universidad del Pacífico (UP), Universidad ESAN, the Centre for Continuing Education at PUCP, the Centre for Executive Education at UP, as well as in the Master’s programmes in Civil Law at PUCP and UPAO.
He is an accredited researcher in the National Scientific, Technological and Technological Innovation Register (RENACYT). He served as coordinator for the international compilation work Principales Cláusulas de la Contratación Privada Contemporánea (Ius et Veritas, 2021). He has published dozens of legal research articles in books and specialised journals, and is a frequent national and international speaker.
He is a member of the Peruvian Society of Construction Law (SPDC), the Chilean Society of Construction Law (SChDC), and the Group for the Harmonisation of Law in Latin America (GADAL). He was a member of the Working Group for the Revision and Improvement of the Civil Code, chaired by Dr Gastón Fernández, as well as the Sectorial Working Group for updating the Technical Standards of the National Building Regulations. He is fluent in Italian, English, and German.
Since March 2022, as Business Affairs Counsel for Latin America at Hitachi Rail, he has been responsible for resolving corporate governance matters and legal issues relating to contracts, construction law, and commercial law in Hitachi Rail STS’s investments in Lima, Panama, and other cities across Latin America. He handles legal matters related to the contractual structure (with the client, consortia, and subcontractors) through which Hitachi Rail STS participates in the Lima Metro Line 2 project.
